Ruined my mother's 101st birthday cake

Have noticed a couple small chips off this in the past. I was baking a birthday cake for my mother's 101st birthday. Looked at the batter & there were chunks of the mixer coating. Had to throw it out and no time to go buy a cake. Love the mixer but this attachment is not only junk but dangerous.

Wonderful machine to have especially for bakers!!
Baker4Years
1/10/2019
I do not have the Artisan 4.8L model. I have KitchenAid Model KSM90, an older model I have had for many years and never had to replace my flat beater as yet, until now. I just noticed after baking Christmas cookies that the beater has a chip and now I don't want to use it. I always hand wash the beater, never in dishwasher. After reading the reviews on the same accessory, I want to know whether or not there is a replacement of the same beater or would any of your newer beaters (i.e., stainless steel or beater with scraper) be compatible with my model? I do not want nor need to buy a new mixer. I wouldn't do without this machine and would recommend the KitchenAid mixer -- except for the problem with the coated flat beater!

I love this mixer, but the paint is flaking off the beater like crazy. I cannot use it as is so I was going to order a new one, but I see it has the same white coating as the old one I have. My mixer is probably 10-15 years old and it has had a few small spots that were coming off, but I just tried to use it after we moved and there are too many to even use it.

I've used KitchenAid mixers for several years. My early tilting model did not suffer these issues. Since updating a few years ago to the pro-line, I've had to replace the flat beaters multiple times. They ALWAYS chip! Is KitchenAid unable to remedy this problem?

Doesn't live up to usual KitchenAid standards
russwinaz
12/3/2018
As you'll read in many (many!) other reviews, this attachment works just fine - until it begins to chip. And that doesn't take long, no matter how careful you are in hand-washing it. Once it starts chipping, you're faced with the worry of chips (enamel?) ending up in your food. The only alternative KitchenAid offers has no enamel coating, but it soon tarnishes and starts turning batters and doughs gray. HELLO, KITCHENAID: This has been reported and lamented for years now. Would you please respond to your gazillions of otherwise-satisfied users and offer a stainless steel version? (And while you're at it, how about discontinuing the two you offer now, since they're both unacceptably defective?)

Better than what my mixer came with

I bought this because I like to put my beaters in the top rack of my dishwasher. The piece that came with the mixer oxidizes if you do that and leaves a grey/residue. This does not do that. It eventually chip and I have to buy another one. I wish I could buy a stainless steel one but I haven't found it

Great mixer, horrible chipped beater
Pamela Jean
11/23/2018
Why can't Kitchen Aid solve this problem? You have the tech expertise to make a great mixer, but after years of complaints, can't make a decent beater out of stainless steel without the chemical coated surface that chips, and ruins food as a result. After replacing twice, I now buy the hard plastic and half rubber blade from Amazon. Had one of those break, but at least I didn't have chips of paint/coating in my cake.

The coating on the flat coated mixing attachment for our Artisan Kitchinaid mixer is chipping off. Not good to have in your batter! I see this is a common problem. Kitchinaid needs to fix this! Our model is KSM150PSBK. The part is K5THCB. Afraid to purchase a new one since the same problem will probably occur.

I purchased my Kitchenaid mixer about 2 years ago and I noticed the paddle began to chip away after a year of usage. Even though i am very careful about washing it and not using any type of scrubber on it, it has continue to chip away. Please find a different material to coat your beater! For the amount of money I paid for my mixer, I would expect the beater to be made of better quality materials!

I am a food and nutrition teacher and care for 5 tilt-head mixers. All but two of these beaters have chipped in the last 3 years. They do get a lot of use, but not as much as you would think. I wish there were an alternative for replacement, such as a stainless steel beater, that will not chip. I have not had any problems with the dough hooks or metal whips that come with them. We NEVER put these in the dishwasher, always hand wash them.
Poor design of the coating.

It sounds like this is a common problem with the beaters and dough hooks that are enamel coated. I found the chip laying on the counter, from the flat beater, and I haven't even used it once. I've only owned the stand mixer for less than a month!
Just wrote to Kitchenaid in hopes that they will take care of it promptly. Of course, that doesn't help me with Christmas baking this weekend!
I love the mixer but can see problems with any parts with enamel coating down the road!!!!

I have the white coated flat beater and it ruined a batch of Russian Tea Cookies we were making. It had about an inch of the coating peeled off into the cookie batter. Luckily my sister in law has the same mixer so I headed over there and borrowed her beater. I checked it out before we started, no chips! So we made the full batch with no issues. On the second batch, the coating chipped! Luckily we caught it early enough so I could pick out the pieces and not ruin another batch.
What other options do we have? The pewter/aluminum paddle that turns everything black? KITCHENAID, Please make a stainless steel version for the 5qt mixer!

Chipped enamel coming off beater and dough hook

I love love love my KitchenAid mixer, but I've had it only about 4 yrs., and the enamel recently starting chipping and flaking off my flat beater. Tonight I was making homemade rolls for Thanksgiving, and after using the dough hook, I took it off the mixer to wash and saw that there are several areas of missing enamel. Couldn't take a chance that it might be in my dough, and now I have to replace both the flat beater AND the dough hook because I don't dare use either. I'm so disappointed and thought the quality of the attachments would have been better and longer lasting.

KitchenAid Coated Flat Beater chips too easily
9/15/2017
Yesterday the Attachment Hub loosened and fell into my zucchini bread batter, initially unnoticed by me. As the beater hit it, it unbalanced the mixer bowl and I quickly shut the mixer off, discovered the problem and removed the Hub from the batter. Unfortunately I didn't notice until washing it that, in coming into contact with the flat beater for even a brief period of time, it had chipped off a 1/4" section of coating on the bar. Had to discard the batch as there is no information regarding the composition of the bar coating, and can't imagine it is anything we would want to consume. A better design would be plain stainless steel or aluminum, yes? Or something that cannot chip.

Chipped Beater & Whisk Attachment
9/13/2017
I got my second Kitchenaid Stand Mixer as a wedding present. After a few months of use, one day while I was making whipping cream, I noticed that there were weird metallic colours in my whipping cream. To my shock, my beater attachment's paint had worn off and now was going into my food. This was the same case for my whisk attachment. Some dark metallic paint (?) was rubbing off from the whisk attachment! I don't know what they changed but my first Kitchenaid Mixer (from 8+ years ago!) has had no problems like this new one! Ugh!

The mixer works well, the beater flakes off
7/30/2017
I love the mixer, but I would recommend getting an after-market beater blade (and dough hook, really) that is not coated in this material. It chips and flakes off. To give you an idea, the bottom of my beater has worn away and upper edges are flaking off. To make matters works, my dough hook is flaking away around the top, not where it would get rubbed putting it on the machine, but the outside edge. This is ending up in my batter, which is disturbing.

7/23/2017
The original beater lasted for years and years, but eventually needed to be replaced. I am now on at least my fourth replacement, and they average around six months until the paint starts chipping off. I even had my mixer professionally serviced to make sure there was no issue with the bowl height. I hand wash only. It seems crazy that the mixer itself still works great after 25 years, but I now have to replace beaters so frequently.

have had my kitchenaid for over 30 yrs! just now i am faced with having to replace the 'coated' paddle..has started not to peel but just wear away, having said all that i know many of my friends that purchased new mixers are not happy with the quality of the new ones! even the motors are failing!! don't know why Kitchenaid is not on top of this but if i have to one day i will buy a different brand!! Kitchenaid is not the only company that manufactures mixers...lots of excellent brands from Europe and elsewhere..so i recommend that the company take our complaints seriously, although, i personally have not had a problem with mine and i don't plan on buying a new just for the sake of a 'new' color.

Again, bad beater
7/2/2017
I love my KitchenAid mixer!!!! I hate the beater!!! I bought my mixer in December, so excited to finally own a KitchenAid, dream come true. Unfortunately, like everyone else, the beater has to be replaced. I have carefully hand washed mine since buying it in hopes it would last because I heard about having to replace them. It's not fair that it has to be done especially when you hear of the much older models lasting forever it seems but what is one to do? If you want a KitchenAid mixer, you have to put up with this flaw because there will be nothing done about it, because money can't be made if it lasted like the older models.

My husband gave me my kitchen aid mixer about 2 years ago for Christmas. I have the original beater attachment and I refuse to use it. After a few months of owning it the coating began falling off, ruining several recipes along the way. I have to purchase another beater attachment so I can properly make my recipes. For the cost of the mixer the attachments should last a lot longer than a few months to a year or two. The mixer itself works great.
